Lisa Kudrow is cherishing a heartfelt memento from her late Friends co-star Matthew Perry — a whimsical cookie jar clock prop from the beloved sitcom, along with a touching note he left inside.
Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday, Kudrow shared the story behind the sentimental keepsake. “Matthew gave that to me at the end of our last episode,” she recalled, referring to the jar that once sat in Monica and Rachel’s apartment. “I recently found the note that he had in it for me. I hadn’t opened it up or looked inside of it, but yeah, he did. He had a note in there, and I forgot about it. Timing is everything.”
A Meaningful Wrap Gift with a Hidden Surprise
The cookie jar clock appeared in the season 8 episode “The One With the Cooking Class” — a memorable moment when Phoebe (Kudrow) helps Chandler (Perry) prepare for a job interview by coaching him to avoid awkward puns.
Kudrow revealed the jar became a special part of her and Perry’s on-set bond. Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel in 2020, she said, “That was the wrap gift he gave me. We were laughing hysterically, and crying, because it was the end.”
A Fondly Remembered On-Set Joke
The cookie jar clock holds even more significance due to a hilarious behind-the-scenes moment. Kudrow recounted how, during filming, she improvised a line by gesturing to the jar as a stand-in for a clock.
“My line was, ‘Ooh, I better get going!’ But I didn’t have a watch, and I realized too late. So I gestured to that cookie jar and said, ‘Ooh! Look at the time, I gotta get going.’ After the scene, Matthew asked me, ‘Did you point at the cookie jar and say, Look at the time?‘” Kudrow laughed at the memory. “It became this ongoing joke between us.”
A Tribute to Perry’s Legacy
Kudrow’s appearance on Barrymore’s show came just over a year after Perry’s tragic passing at 54, following complications from ketamine use. His death deeply impacted his Friends castmates, who have shared numerous heartfelt stories in tribute to his humor, kindness, and legacy.
Reflecting on Perry’s comedic brilliance, Kudrow recalled his standout performance at the very first Friends table read. “Matthew was doing something that didn’t sound like what I expected,” she said. “It was like nothing I’d ever heard before. He was blow-away hilarious.”
A Friendship That Lives On
Since Perry’s death, Kudrow and her co-stars, including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc, have continued to honor his memory by sharing stories from their time together on Friends. Cox, in particular, recently posted a heartfelt tribute on the anniversary of Perry’s passing, while Aniston praised his openness about addiction struggles in his memoir.
As Kudrow held the cookie jar close to her heart, she expressed how Perry’s memory and impact continue to resonate with her. “I feel my mama right now,” she said of her late mother, “and I feel Matthew, too. This is for both of them.”
